Riflescope reviews: Only part of the process
If you're in the market for a riflescope, reading riflescope reviews can
be very helpful. But just reading riflescope reviews is no substitute
for doing research on your own. You need to take the time to learn about
the various makes, models and price ranges in order to make an informed
decision. Here are some things to look for when selecting a riflescope.
Something one of the riflescope reviews you read explain in detail is
whether the optics in the scope are coated, and more importantly, the
specific kind of coating the optics have. In general, the coatings on
the optics in a riflescope reduce light loss and glare, improve light
throughput and deliver a bright, high-contrast image. The more coatings,
the better the light transmission and the better the image. When you
read about riflescopes, there are specific phrases that describe the
type and amount of coatings the optics have. Here is what those phrases
mean.
For example, riflescope reviews might mention "coated" lenses. That
means there is a single-layer coating on at least one lens. The phrase
"fully-coated" means there is a single-layer coating on all air-to-glass
surfaces. "Multi-coated" lenses have multiple layers on at least one
lens and all surfaces are coated at least once. When a riflescope has
"fully multi-coated" lenses, there are multiple coating layers on all
air-to-glass surfaces. Fully multi-coated lenses are the most effective
in gathering light and reducing glare.
From just this single example, you can see that riflescope reviews have
their limitations. There is no substitute for doing your own research
and understanding the features and functions of riflescope in enough
detail to make a purchasing decision that you're comfortable with.
