Binoculars reviews: Don't rely on them completely
If you're shopping for binoculars, reading binoculars reviews can be
very helpful, but only to a point. Reading binoculars reviews cannot
take the place of doing research on your own. It's important to learn
about the various manufacturers and the features and functions they
offer. Only then will you be able to make an informed purchasing
decisions.
Although there are plenty of binoculars reviews available, they might
just lead to confusion unless you understand the terms they discuss. For
example, if you don't understand the terms "power" and "aperture,"
descriptions of these features, if mentioned in a review, won't mean
much to you. Here is a short explanation of these qualities.
A number followed by an "x" usually expresses power or magnification.
Aperture is usually expressed as a number following the "x." For
example, the expression "10x50" means the binoculars have a
magnification factor of 10 and an aperture of 50. If binoculars reviews
don't explain this, it makes them pretty useless. A power of 10 means
that the object seen through the instrument will appear to be 10 times
closer than if seen with the naked eye. An aperture of 50 means that the
diameter (usually expressed in millimeters) of the objective lens in the
binoculars (the lens at the far end of the instrument) is 50 mm. The
larger the aperture, the more light the lens can gather, and the more
bright and high-contrast the image will be.
As you can see, binoculars reviews only provide part of the picture. To
select the right instrument for your needs, you should take the time to
gain a basic understanding of how binoculars and the optics inside them
work.
