Bushnell rangefinders: Bringing digital
laser technology to the field
Some Bushnell rangefinders are high-tech
devices capable of pinpoint distance measurements. Utilizing a class 1
laser as certified by the FDA, Bushnell rangefinders are accurate to
within ± 1 yard or meter. A typical
rangefinder consists of a monocular viewfinder with an inline LCD
display, a laser transmitter and a laser receiver, all installed in a
compact, hand-held unit. How does a laser rangefinder work? Read on to
learn how.
Once a target is identified and located in
the viewfinder of the Bushnell rangefinder, the laser transmitter sends
out a high-speed pulse of infrared light. The flight time of the pulse
is measured by a precision clock-timer as the light travels to the
target, reflects off it, and returns to the receiver. The flight time is
converted to distance and the distance displays in the viewfinder.
Bushnell rangefinders have many features for
convenience and utility. A diopter adjustment on the monocular helps to
compensate for individual differences in eyesight. A strap can be
attached to the unit to make it easy to carry. A low battery indicator
displays in the viewfinder. The viewfinder has a reticle (crosshairs) so
the instrument can be precisely aimed at the target. In normal mode, the
laser emits a single pulse for a single measurement. In scan mode, the
laser emits multiple pulses to continuously update the range -- good for
moving targets, sporting events, etc.
With a maximum distance of 800 yards and a
minimum distance of 20 yards, some Bushnell rangefinders are very
versatile. There is even a mode that compensates for light that is
reflected off raindrops or snowflakes on its way to the target and back.
A special version for bow hunters mounts directly on the weapon. All
Bushnell rangefinders are waterproof, shockproof, durable and compact.
Some versions are rubber armored for additional ruggedness.
