Zoom binoculars: Features and functions to
look for
When you're shopping for binoculars, especially zoom binoculars, you
need to have a basic understanding of their uses, performance and
features. Zoom binoculars are available from many manufacturers. Look
for quality instruments from makers like Bushnell or Meade. These models
will allow you the flexibility and ease of zeroing in on your viewing
target at low magnification Then, with a quick adjustment, you can zoom
in to see incredible detail at higher magnification.
Zoom binoculars specifications are usually expressed in a numeric format
separated by an "x" -- for example, 10-30x50. The numbers to the left of
the "x" mean that the zoom factor runs from 10 to 30 power. Power or
magnification is measured against naked-eye sighting. 10-30x means that
the object seen through the binoculars will appear to be 10 to 30 times
closer than if seen with the naked eye. The number after the "x" is the
diameter in millimeters of the lens at the end of the binocular tube,
the objective. The larger the objective, the brighter the image will
appear. Buy the largest objective you can afford -- a 70mm objective
will deliver an image almost twice as bright as a 50mm lens. A larger
objective will also perform better in low light conditions.
Reflection and glare can be a problem at higher magnifications. Lens
coatings help reduce these by improving light throughput. Look for
lenses with multi-coated or fully multi-coated lenses. They may be more
expensive but will perform better. Internal fogging can also happen
unless the tubes are nitrogen filled and well sealed. Zoom binoculars
should have all the quality features of regular binoculars and are
perfect for hunters, bird watchers and sporting enthusiasts alike.
