Shooting targets? Consider a handgun scope
If you enjoy shooting targets with your handgun at the range or
outdoors, you should consider purchasing a handgun scope. Shooting
targets will be much more enjoyable and your accuracy will improve if
you use a scope.
Handgun scopes have different requirements than rifle scopes when
shooting targets. Handguns often have greater recoil than rifles, so the
scope for a handgun needs to be more rugged. Because the range of a
handgun is less than a rifle, variable power on a handgun becomes a
desirable feature for zeroing in on the target. Typical variable power
is in the range of 2-8x.
Eye relief is also important when using a handgun for shooting targets.
Unlike a rifle, a handgun must be held away from the body. Eye relief is
the distance you can hold the scope away from the eye and still see a
clear image. LER or long eye relief is what allows a scope to be used on
a handgun. Many models offer LER of 18 inches or more. But a problem
arises when using a variable power scope. Sometimes LER is lost when
zooming to high magnification. This requires the shooter has to move the
weapon in closer to regain it. So be sure to look for a scope that will
maintain LER at all magnifications.
Other features to look for are sealed and coated optics. The scope
should also be nitrogen filled to reduce interior fogging. It should be
fully adjustable for elevation and windage and have what's called
repeatable accuracy, meaning the scope has to provide a consistent
aiming point time after time. You have to be able to shoot a tight group
at each setting on variable power -- and there should be a single point
of impact when shooting targets.
