Hunting supplies: Be sure to include
binoculars or spotting scope
When you're shopping for hunting supplies, there's a lot to consider.
Quality, price and value all figure prominently in you purchasing
decisions. You have to travel light but want to have all the right
equipment. Comfort is important too, when you're getting ready to spend
the day in a tree stand or duck blind. Time is another factor. The
sooner you can sight the target and aim your weapon, the more likely you
are to fire an accurate shot. Binoculars or a spotting scope will enable
you to find and track a target from a distance, so you're ready for that
shot in close, making them invaluable hunting supplies.
Binoculars come in many shapes and sizes. Two things to know when
considering binoculars as hunting supplies are the instrument's power
and lens diameter. These features are usually expressed as two numbers
separated by an "x," for example, "8x50." The first number represents
the magnification or power of the instrument. In our example, 8x means
that the image you see through the binoculars will appear to be 8 times
closer than if seen with the naked eye. The lens farthest away from your
eye is known as the objective. The size of this lens is critical to
binoculars performance and is represented as the second number in our
example, 50. The 50 means that the objective is 50mm wide. The larger
the objective, the more light the instrument can gather and the more
bright and clear the image will be. Zoom binoculars will have their
magnification expressed in two numbers (8-12x).
Spotting scopes are actually compact telescopes designed for terrestrial
viewing. While you may not think of a spotting scope as essential to
your hunting supplies, it can be a valuable tool. A spotting scope
provides a more stable foundation than binoculars combined with the
higher magnification of a telescope. A spotting scope usually has higher
magnification, for example 20-60x. The objective lens is usually bigger,
for example, 80mm. An 80mm objective will gather almost twice as much
light as a 50mm. With 20-60x magnification, you'll be able to spot your
target long before it spots you.
