Surveillance equipment: See without being
seen
For discreet low- or no-light surveillance equipment, choose a night
vision device. Need to see in near darkness for a security patrol or
other reason? Consider purchasing a night vision device (NVD) to add to
your collection of surveillance equipment.
A night vision device is a piece of surveillance equipment. Partially
electronic and partially optical, an NVD, with its enhanced
functionality is perfect for night missions. The astonishing light
amplification power of some NVDs can be as high as 22,000 times.
Although the image quality can vary with distance, environment and most
importantly, price, even a less-expensive "Generation I" instrument can
amplify up to 500x.
Night vision optics are similar to other optics in that they focus
light. The difference is that an NVD focuses the image on one end of a
device known as a light intensifier tube. This tube converts the light
into electrons which are amplified and accelerated onto a
phosphor-covered screen, similar to an older-generation television
screen. The electrons cause the phospors to glow, producing an image
that can be seen through one or two eyepieces. The display is monochrome
on a green screen. If no light is available, some NVDs have built-in
infrared emitters that can cast small amounts of this nearly-invisible
light on the subject. Typical range of a basic model NVD is 5 - 200
feet, making it a useful item of surveillance equipment.
As surveillance equipment, NVDs are as easy to use as a video camera but
require a dual focusing procedure. Step one is to focus the eyepiece on
the internal green screen. Step two is to focus the lens on the subject.
The whole focusing process takes just a few seconds.
If you want to discreetly observe in very low light without anyone being
aware of your presence, consider an NVD. To learn more about these
