Hunting equipment: Be sure to include binoculars
When you're packing up for a trip to the backcountry, your hunting
equipment should include binoculars. The sooner you spot the target, the
greater the opportunity for a successful shot. While you may not think
of binoculars as hunting equipment, in reality they are. Here is some
information on choosing binoculars for hunting.
Many hunters make the mistake of choosing compact binoculars as hunting
equipment, thinking they will perform adequately in the field. Compact
binoculars are OK for the theater, but not in the field -- they simply
do not gather enough light to render a bright, clear, high-contrast
image. The brightness of the image is a function of the optics used. The
lens at the far end of the binoculars is called the objective. Simply
stated, the larger the objective, the more light the instrument can
gather. When you're tracking game in low light conditions -- like at
dawn or dusk, you want binoculars that will collect the most light
possible. The size of the objective is usually expressed in millimeters
(mm). For the best images in all light conditions, look for objective
diameters in the range of 42-50mm. While this size will make for a
larger binoculars, the superior performance should more than compensate.
Another fault of compact units is their ability to magnify. To get a
good, solid image in time to take a shot, you need fairly powerful
magnification. Magnification is defined as how much closer the object
seen in the binoculars will appear as opposed to being viewed with the
naked eye. For example, 10x magnification means that the target will
appear to be 10 times closer than if seen with the naked eye. Quite an
advantage! Look for binoculars to use as hunting equipment that have
magnification in the range of 10-16x.
To make that trophy shot, you need all the advantage you can get.
Including the right binoculars in your hunting equipment might just give
you the edge. To learn more about binoculars, click one of the links
