Tripods: Essential gear for spotting scopes,
cameras and binoculars
Tripods come in many versions and sizes. From tabletop models to
heavy-duty models with extra height, tripods are important pieces of
outdoor equipment for the hunter or nature observer. Here are some
features quality tripods share.
Tripods can cost hundreds of dollars, but you should be able to find a
quality product priced for your budget. First and foremost, the tripod
should be able to accept the standard ¼-20 thread socket that is built
into many spotting scopes, cameras and binoculars.
Tripods should be easy to set up and take down. Look for models with
quick leg locks and smooth action. Also important are quick release
clamps to expand or collapse the legs.
The pan and tilt mechanism is a critical component in tripods. Once your
equipment is mounted, you need to be able to move it vertically (tilt)
or horizontally (pan). Among the best pan and tilt mechanisms are what's
called "fluid heads." These are literally filled with a viscous liquid
that enables extremely smooth motion, whether pan or tilt. Over-pan or
over-tilt can cause the whole tripod, with your expensive equipment
mounted, to fall over, so be sure the model you choose has stops or
locks to prevent this. The locks should also have multiple positions for
versatility and fine adjustment.
Better tripods will have non-slip feet made of rubber or some other
material. The feet should be adjustable. The center column should be
geared, so that you get stability and good adjustability without
slippage. The legs should be braced to the center column, again for
stability. Choose a model made from aluminum or titanium.
