Leupold
The evolution of Leupold rifle scopes
Back in the 1940’s Marcus Leupold, head
of the family owned fourth generation company was hunting on the rainy
west side of Oregon’s Cascade Range. Suddenly a nice Blacktail buck
appeared, and Marcus fired. Unfortunately, due to the fact his scope had
become fogged with interior moisture and his view was obscured and he
missed. Lack of accuracy in the field adjustments of the scope also left
him with little confidence in his riflescopes optical sight.
Spurred on by the frustration of that experience with his riflescope,
Marcus set out to build much better scopes. He was confident that the
firm’s expertise in the manufacture, design and quality control of
sophisticated optics for surveying equipment would be advantageous in
his desire to engineer a new generation of riflescopes that were less
likely to draw moisture and more easily adjusted for accuracy. Thus the
Leupold rifle scope was born.
During World War II Leopold’s engineers repaired telescopic gun sights
for the U.S. Merchant Marine and in the process learned a lot about
waterproofing optical instruments. In the process they learned a very
important fact: If you replace the oxygen inside a scope with pure,
bone-dry nitrogen, you could virtually eliminate the chance for fogging
in riflescopes.
As a result of Leopold’s engineers leadership on the riflescope project
Leopold’s first riflescope was made available to America’s hunters. That
was in 1947, and the rifle scope was called the Plainsman. They became
the most water-resistant scopes of the era, Leopold’s Plainsman rifle
scopes featured internal adjustments and a permanently sealed main tube.
Word soon spread and the Plainsman scopes became very popular among
hunters and shooters who had previously experienced frustration with
poorly sealed rifle scopes.
