Spotting scopes: Great for bird watching
A spotting scope is a compact telescope
designed primarily for terrestrial observing, bird watching and nature
study. For bird watching, the spotting scope is ideal because it allows
the observer to see birds at magnifications beyond the range of a
typical binocular.
One of the main advantages of using a
spotting scope for bird watching is the way it allows a you to observe
sensitive or endangered species from a safe, friendly distance. It's
important to minimize disruption and stress to birds and other wildlife.
The spotting scope's ability to see at greater distances helps greatly
in this respect. With a spotting scope, chances are you'll see more and
better, in amazing detail.
When choosing a spotting scope, some
features to consider are magnification, field of view and aperture. Bird
watching has its own special requirements, so look for a scope with a
magnification of about 20x to 40x. With 40x magnification, the object
being viewed appears to be 40 times closer than when seen with the naked
eye. The higher the magnification, the smaller the field of view and the
less bright the image will appear.
Field of view refers to the diameter of the
area seen through the scope. A wide field of view makes it easier to
spot that elusive avian or track birds in flight. Generally, the higher
the magnification, the narrower the field of view. Field of view is also
dependent on the design of the eyepiece. A wide-angle eyepiece will give
you a wider field of view for bird watching.
Aperture is the diameter of the objective
lens and is usually expressed in millimeters. The larger the aperture,
the more light that can enter the scope. With a large aperture, the
image will be brighter, clearer and more detailed. For bird watching an
aperture of 50 to 90mm is typical.
Other features of spotting scopes for bird
watching include type of focusing mechanism and style of optical design.
