Orion telescopes: A
comprehensive product line with a wide range of price points
Orion telescopes of Santa Cruz, California
manufactures a line of telescopes for every budget and skill level.
Since 1975, Orion telescopes have been widely used by enthusiastic
amateur astronomers. Here's an overview of what Orion offers.
Reflector telescopes, these are perfect for
beginners because they offer affordability combined with quality optics.
Orion telescopes of the reflector type are best for looking at the moon
and planets, that is, near-space objects. Although reflectors are not
typically recommended for observing deep-space objects like galaxies,
some of the Orion short tube models are touted as excelling in
wide-field images of deep-space nebulas and star clusters.
Refractor telescopes use mirrors rather than
lenses as their optics. Often more powerful than reflectors, refractors
can be used to observe deep-sky objects like double and variable stars
while providing high-definition images of features like lunar rilles or
mountains on Mars. With their larger diameter optics and long tube focal
lengths, Orion telescopes like these are versatile instruments perfect
for the intermediate user.
Cassegrain telescopes use a combination of
mirrors and lenses to fold the optics and form an image. With tubes as
short as 12", these devices can be compact and portable. Orion
telescopes of the Cassegrain type display brighter, more highly resolved
images even in the dimmest of lighting conditions, outperforming both
small refractors and some reflectors. Cassegrain telescopes can also be
used as spotting scopes for terrestrial observations.
Dobsonian telescopes are actually reflectors
with a simple tube and easy-to-use azimuth mount. Dobsonians can have
large apertures (6" to 17"). Because of their large apertures,
Dobsonians are well suited to observing deep-sky objects. Orion
telescopes of the Dobsonian type have parabolic mirrors up to 10" in
diameter for powerful light-gathering capability. With the optional
computer controller that has a 14,000-object database, the instrument is
automatically guided to the correct location in the sky.
