The scope: An
essential accessory for the hunter
A quality rifle or handgun scope makes your
weapon more accurate and versatile at varying distances and in changing
light conditions. A scope makes it easier to spot and track game.
Crosshairs in the instrument allow you to zero in on the target,
assuring an accurate shot. The rifle or handgun scopes you choose can
make the difference between success and failure in the hunt.
A scope brings distant targets and
surrounding objects into close focus. This makes for safer and
error-free shooting. The optics gather and concentrate available light,
enabling the hunter to shoot in lower light conditions. Look for optics
that are fully multi-coated because they will improve light throughput
and image clarity. In addition, coated lenses resist scratching. Also
consider magnification in relation to the distances at which you usually
hunt. Low power scopes are most useful at close range or for moving
targets. Choose medium power for shooting big game at intermediate
range. For target shooting and small game, high power is best.
The reticle is the crosshair or pattern
placed in the scope's eyepiece which allows the hunter to bring the gun
into position on the target. Reticles can be illuminated or not. There
is even an innovative red dot reticle that makes it seem like a bright
red dot is projected onto the target, great for low light conditions
that tend to make the traditional black crosshairs fade.
A scope should be solidly constructed from a
single tube of aircraft-quality aluminum or titanium. The lenses in the
tube should be "buffered" with seals or o-rings, so the instrument can
withstand the recoil of the weapon, time after time. Adjustments should
be easy to make and should have repeatable accuracy. The unit must be
waterproof, fogproof and shockproof.
You spent a lot of time any money selecting
your firearm. Buy the best scope for it that you can afford. It will
optimize the weapon's performance. To learn more about scopes and to see
