Scopes:
Bringing the target into focus
There are 3 basic types of scopes:
rifle/shotgun, handgun and spotting. Each type has its own set of
features and functions. Read on to learn some basics about scopes.
Rifle and shotgun scopes indicate a bullet’s
point of impact. Distant targets and surrounding objects appear closer.
For safer, more accurate shooting in the field or on the range,
understanding the features available on these products is important.
Coated lens surfaces reduce light loss and glare due to reflection,
leading to better light transmission and a brighter image. Two numbers
separated by an "x" often refer to magnification. In "4x40"
magnification spec, the first number is the power or magnification of
the scope. With a "4x," the object being viewed appears to be four times
closer than when seen with the unaided eye. The second number is the
diameter of the objective or front lens. More light will enter a larger
objective, leading to a brighter image. The reticle is the crosshair or
pattern placed in the eyepiece of the scope which establishes the gun’s
position on the target.
Handgun scopes share many characteristics
with rifle and shotgun models, but they must be more rugged due to the
strong recoil of some weapons. Optics are often "buffered" in the tube
with O-rings to prevent shifting. Another important difference is eye
relief. The shooter must be able to see a full view through the device
when held at arm's length. Whether you're hunting deer or "varmints," a
handgun scope can improve range and accuracy.
Spotting scopes are compact refractor
telescopes designed for terrestrial observation. Refractor telescopes
use lenses (rather than mirrors) as their optical systems. These units
provide a right-side-up image and comfortable viewing angle when looking
at the horizon. Widely used by bird watchers, these devices can be hand
held or tripod mounted.
Scopes vary widely in price and design. To
choose one that's right for you, research your needs thoroughly and
match those needs carefully to a scope that suits your preferences.
