Rangefinders:
Accurate targeting with a high-tech flair
The single best way to improve the accuracy
of your shots when hunting is to know the distance to the target.
Rangefinders are small handheld devices that do just that. Accurate to
within one yard, a rangefinder uses a laser to measure distances. Pulses
of infrared light, safe for the eyes, are sent toward the target. A
high-speed clock measures the time it takes for the pulses to bounce off
the target and return. The process is virtually instantaneous, making
rangefinders valuable tools to sportsmen.
Rangefinders are precision optical
instruments accurate in the range of 5 to 1500 yards. Many models are
accurate in poor weather conditions like rain or snow. The color,
surface finish, size and shape of the target all effect reflectivity and
range. The brighter the color, the longer the range.
With monocular or binocular eyepieces and
lenses, rangefinders can have a heads-up internal display, usually LCD.
There are separate lenses for laser transmission and reception. All the
optics are precisely aligned, making for incredibly exact measurements.
These units are battery operated, lightweight and compact. All you do is
line up the target in the crosshairs and push the "fire" button to
activate the laser measuring process. As you continue to look through
the device, the distance to the target will display. Some models also
have varying targeting modes such as "scan" or "rain." Others can
measure speed as well as distance.
Quality rangefinders are available from
Bushnell, Nikon, Leica, Leupold and Newcon. To learn more about these
