The telescope: A simple instrument that
helps us see the objects in the night sky in all their beauty and detail
The telescope is an amazing device that can
make faraway objects like the moon, stars and planets seem closer. When
you look at the moon through the telescope, intricate surface details --
craters and mountains -- appear in stark definition. The moons of
Jupiter and the rings of Saturn are also visible through this remarkable
instrument.
The telescope is a device for collecting and
concentrating light. There are two basic types: refractor and reflector.
The refractor uses lenses and the reflector uses mirrors. Both types
consist of a long tube that contains the optics and an eyepiece. Light
from distant objects in the sky is gathered by the optics and bent to a
super-bright focal point inside the tube. The eyepiece receives the
focal image and magnifies it to the size of your eye's pupil.
Two major properties of the telescope are
how well it collects light and how much it can magnify the image
received from the focal point. Light collection depends on the diameter
of the lens or mirror, known as the aperture. The larger the aperture,
the more light the instrument can collect. The eyepiece performs the
image magnification. Because of the cost and difficulty of grinding
lenses large enough to observe detail in faint, deep-sky objects, the
refractor is best used to observe closer celestial objects like the moon
and planets. Since large mirrors are cheaper and easier to make, the
reflector can be used to observe more distant objects like galaxies and
nebulas.
Refractor or reflector, the telescope has
helped generations of stargazers observe and understand a variety of
celestial bodies in the night sky.
