rangefinder
Every inch is
accounted for with a rangefinder in your hand!
The rangefinder, formerly thought of as a
fancy rich boy’s toy, has found its relevance in the market only
recently, though it has been around for more than a decade. With the
passing years, the rangefinder has undergone a lot of technological
innovation and is sleeker, easier to use and gives better image quality
than ever before. A rangefinder’s main purpose is to measure distances
over land that may be vast or inaccessible. They have been used
extensively by the military, for research purposes and by sports
enthusiasts, like golfers.
Rangefinders may or may not use laser
technology. A laser rangefinder works by emitting a very fast pulse of
laser light towards the specified target. This light reflects off the
target and re-enters the rangefinder and depending on the time it takes
for the light to return, the distance is calculated and is displayed on
an LCD screen in the unit of your choice- e.g. yards, meters or miles.
Non-laser rangefinders use powerful lenses with good magnifying
capability and are used to calculate shorter distances - like on a golf
course. Price-wise, a golfing rangefinder are relatively cheap at $25-
$30 while the normal laser rangefinders can cost about four times more.
Of course, you can pay a lot more with the expensive options from
Swarovski and Leupold.
Today’s rangefinders come equipped with a
number of capabilities like slope reduction and azimuth, which can be
manipulated by the user to achieve a greater level of accuracy. Other
features include measurement of height, coordinates and vertical
distances between the user and a certain point or between two specified
points.
