night vision scopes
Explore the dark with
night vision scopes!
Lets break up the term night vision scope,
shall we? Night: meaning not day, vision: as in seeing and scope:
an instrument that affords you a clearer view of something. Night vision
scopes are used widely by wildlife enthusiasts, law enforcement officers
and the military. Night vision scopes may use either of these two
technologies- image enhancement, i.e. capturing the available
light, however insubstantial it may be and amplifying it to a large
extent so that it becomes visible, or thermal imaging which essentially
captures that part of Infra Red light which is emitted as heat from a
body or an object. Most commonly used night vision products, including
scopes, use the former technology.
When using image-enhancement technology, the
view that is available is that of objects in a flickering, eerie green
color. How is this green color obtained? Photons-units of light energy-
are captured by the night vision scopes and turned into electrons. These
electrons pass through multiple channels of a thin disk and as they come
in contact with the walls of the disk, they strike off more electrons.
These electrons hit a phosphor screen that turns them back into photons,
and we see the object that we’re looking at, though in green color.
Night vision scopes need not only be used
for fun. They can also be used in emergencies, to rescue people who are
lost in the wilderness at night or by farmers to detect animals that
destroy their crops or livestock in the dark. With so many uses, no
wonder night vision scopes have become so immensely popular. For more
