Celestron: Premier manufacturer of
state-of-the-art telescopes
Celestron is an industry leader in telescopes, binoculars, spotting
scopes and microscopes. But it is in the area of telescopes where
Celestron really shines. Few manufacturers have dedicated an entire
product line to telescopes for beginners, but this company has. With
numerous models at various price ranges, there's sure to be a beginner's
telescope for the astronomer in you.
With objective lens diameters of 60 - 114 mm, Celestron telescopes for
beginners are serious instruments. If you're most interested in looking
at near-space objects like the moon, Mars and Jupiter, choose a
refractor-type instrument. A refractor uses a lens system to deliver an
image to the eyepiece. Light passes straight through the tube to the
eyepiece for a bright, clear view. Refractors' efficiency is limited by
the physics and cost of optical glass -- so refractors, with their
smaller-diameter objectives, are best for viewing relatively close
celestial objects. If you're interested in viewing deep-space objects
like galaxies, nebulas and star clusters, choose a reflector. This type
of scope uses mirrors to collect and focus an image at the eyepiece.
Since mirrors are cheaper and easier to make in larger sizes than
optical glass lenses, reflectors can gather more light than refractors,
making them ideal for studying distant objects in space.
Celestron telescopes for beginners are full-featured, serious
instruments. A special eyepiece makes aiming the instrument a snap.
Sturdy aluminum tripods are standard. Choose an alt-azimuth mount if you
want to use your scope for terrestrial as well as celestial viewing. An
equatorial mount is for celestial viewing only. There are special
filters for solar or lunar observing.
These products are designed to grow with you as your skill increases.
You can add a motor, for example, to efficiently track objects in their
apparent motion through the night sky. There are camera adapters that
allow you to mount a 35-mm SLR camera to the scope for terrestrial
photography or for short-duration exposures to take pictures of the moon
or planets. You can use a variety of eyepieces that enhance your
viewing. Celestron has thought of everything. These are instruments you
can buy with confidence and use for years to come.
