Nightvision binocular: From scouting to
surveillance
Whether you're scouting for big game at twilight or dawn, or making a
security patrol around your home or place of business on the darkest
night, a nightvision binocular is an essential tool.
From nature watching to discreet surveillance, your nightvision
binocular will show you what's hidden or trying to hide.
Nightvision devices (NVD) are sophisticated instruments that combine
optical qualities with high-tech electronics to amplify what available
light there is, allowing the user to see clearly, even in complete
darkness. An NVD like a nightvision binocular is not designed to magnify
distant objects. Most NVDs have a built-in infrared illuminator. The
illuminator delivers additional light to enable viewing in even the
darkest conditions. When you turn on the illuminator, you'll see a small
red dot that tells you it's in operation.
The technology of the nightvision binocular and nightvision devices in
general works to collect any existing light through the lenses at the
front of the instrument. These lenses are known as the objectives. The
collected light by the objectives is focused on an image intensifier
which contains a photocathode. The collected light reacts with the
photocathode and the photons in the light convert to electrons. These
electrons accelerate and strike a phosphor screen (like a TV monitor),
producing a visible image.
There are several "generations" of nightvision devices. The differences
have to do with the technology in the image intensifier. Referred to as
"Generation I, II, III or IV" instruments, the important thing to
remember about these products is that the higher the number, the greater
the light amplification and the better and clearer the image. The price
increases as well, with Generation IV models costing thousands of
dollars. For most applications, Generation I models offer high quality
at a price point most recreational or casual users can afford. A
Generation I model of nightvision binocular will also suffice for some
professional applications like search and rescue, surveillance and
security.
