A pair of binoculars or a telescope - you don’t need night vision to tell the difference between the two!

It is not uncommon for people to get confused between a pair of binoculars and a telescope. Night vision or regular, binoculars are used to look at faraway objects in detail. Often an important part of bird watching and hunting gear, binoculars are also available with fit-in cameras and are known as camera binoculars. A telescope on the other hand is the more technologically advanced cousin of the simple binocular and is used to study the sky, planets and stars. Needless to say, telescopes are not available with night vision technology!

Binoculars that are used for general purposes like bird watching, wildlife observation, or hunting have magnification in the range of 8x to 12x. These can hardly be compared with the vastly higher level of magnification in a telescope, which is 200x or more. However, with the evolution of night vision technology though, infrared illuminators have made binoculars doubly useful than before. Though they still cannot magnify as much as a telescope, at least they can be used during the night now! Nikon binoculars are a popular brand in this category.

Also, since they are compact, binoculars are almost always hand-held and do not need a tripod for added support. On the other hand, being bulky, a telescope needs the support and stability of a tripod. Tripods also provide telescopes with additional steadiness and prevent it from blowing over in a strong gust of wind. From one of the best brands for telescopes, Orion telescope would be a great addition to your astronomical gazing gear!
